CNN Political Editor Paul Steinhauser Washington (CNN) - Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich says he won't speak in prime time at the Republican convention in Tampa, Florida later this month.Instead, the former GOP presidential candidate and one-time rival to presumptive Republican nominee Mitt Romney tells CNN's Wolf Blitzer that he'll hold daily policy workshops for delegates attending the convention.

"I'm working with them right now on a project that I think you'll love that has a lot more time than just an evening speech," Gingrich said Wednesday in an interview on CNN's "The Situation Room."
"We're going to have a very large amount of time working with the delegates and doing things," said Gingrich, adding that the series of afternoon workshops "will be announced in Tampa in the near future."
Gingrich said he's held similar seminars at previous Republican conventions dating back to 1984.
Gingrich, who told CNN he was in communication with the Romney campaign regarding his role at the convention, says he'll be more than visible in Tampa.
"Trust me, anybody who wants to see me will have more than enough opportunity during the convention. I'll probably have more total time than anybody thought possible," Gingrich said.
Gingrich and Romney engaged in a heated battle for the nomination, and for a time in late January Gingrich surged, winning the South Carolina primary. But he quickly lost momentum, losing to Romney in Florida the next week. He won only one other contest, the primary in his one-time home state of Georgia. He formally suspended his campaign in early May.
