RNC marks Obama's birthday with gag gifts

7 hours ago CNN's Gregory Wallace (CNN) - President Barack Obama hit the links for a Saturday round on the morning of his 51st birthday, while Republicans sent gag gifts his way.

"Happy birthday Mr. President," read a cake the Republican National Committee said was delivered on their behalf to the Democratic National Committee. "You didn't bake this," the frosted letters continued, a rift on the president's comment "you didn't build this" - a line on which Republicans have seized.

The communications directors for both the RNC and DNC exchanged words via Twitter over the cake.

"Looks like you have too much time on your hands," the DNC's Brad Woodhouse posted.

"Maybe it would have been better to get some pastry from Caribou Coffee – WH staff loves that place," replied the RNC's Sean Spicer, referencing charges against the Obama Administration involving off-site meetings with lobbyists which Republicans pushed this week.

"Maybe we could have gotten it from the bakery @MittRomney insulted," Woodhouse retorted, bringing up what some called "CookieGate" in April.

For those looking to send their own birthday greetings to Obama, the RNC created a website with mocking e-cards.

"Happy birthday, party at my house again?" says a card with a photo of George Clooney. A May fundraiser held at Clooney's Los Angeles home for Obama's campaign netted the president's effort $15 million.

In another, White House Press Secretary Jay Carney's photo is placed next to the words, "I didn't bring you a cake this year... you already have a lot on your plate."

Russian President Vladimir Putin's likeness accompanies sits alongside the message "After the election, you are flexible for me. I flex for your birthday." The card is a play on Obama's March comments to the outgoing Russian President Dmitry Medvedev, "This is my last election... After my election I have more flexibility."

And one card has the president's own face on it. "My birthday wish: make everyone forget I've been president the last four years."

Another was signed by Solyndra, "You gave us half a billion taxpayer dollars and all you got was this stupid card."

By the RNC's math, the national debt has increased since Obama's last birthday from $14.56 trillion to $15.9 trillion, or an additional $4,347.17 per person in this country.
