Obama camp reveals picks for Romney VP

Obama camp reveals picks for Romney VP 8 hours ago politicalmugshotCNN Political Unit (CNN) – They're not on most people's short lists, but Rep. Michele Bachmann and former Speaker Newt Gingrich would make excellent choices for Mitt Romney's running mate, a spokeswoman for President Barack Obama joked Wednesday.

"We all think Newt Gingrich or Michele Bachmann would be an excellent choice for Mitt Romney to choose," Obama campaign spokeswoman Jen Psaki said aboard Air Force One as the president traveled to a campaign stop in Colorado.

Psaki continued, "No, obviously, the campaign is - we are closely watching. We don't know any more than you do about the day and who it will be."

No matter which name Romney chooses, Psaki said, the Democrats would be prepared "to tell you why that person may be a bad choice for middle-class families."

White House Press Secretary Jay Carney, also speaking Wednesday on the president's plane, said Obama hadn't revealed a preference on who should join his challenger on the GOP ticket.

"I can just say, in conversations I've been a part of, I've never heard him express an opinion about who that might be," Carney said.

In July, Bachmann did not deny whether she was being vetted for the job of Mitt Romney's running mate, saying "Whoever it is that he chooses to bring in as his V.P., it will be a highly competent person."

Pressed further by CNN's Piers Morgan if she was being considered for the gig, Bachmann, whose name has not been frequently mentioned as a potential contender, left it up to the presumptive GOP nominee and his team to make a comment.

"Well, that's something for the campaign to answer on," she said. "That's not for me to make that decision, and that announcement."

Gingrich, however, has been more forthcoming.

"You have known me a long time," Gingrich told CBS's Bob Schieffer in May. "Would you pick me to be a vice presidential nominee? It would be inconceivable."

CNN's Kevin Liptak contributed to this report.
