Boehner 'feeling better' about GOP keeping House majority

Boehner 'feeling better' about GOP keeping House majority 8 hours ago CNN Senior Congressional Producer Deirdre Walsh Washington (CNN) - Back in April House Speaker Boehner raised some alarm bells when he said there was a one in 3 chance Republicans would lose control of the House. But with 96 days until the election Boehner is sounding more optimistic.

"I'm feeling better," Boehner replied when asked about that previous assessment at his weekly press conference on Capitol Hill.

"Our team is in pretty good shape. Our members have worked hard, and frankly our candidates and challengers out there - a lot of them have been through tough primaries. And I feel good about where we are as a team," Boehner said.

Boehner's political aide at the time admitted that the speaker was deliberately trying to get GOP donors and supporters to provide resources to Republican candidates in order to retain the House majority.

The speaker did add that it's not time to sit back, saying, "we've got a lot of work to do between now and November but our team is doing well."

While Boehner was expressing confidence, the executive director of the House Democrats' campaign committee argued the GOP's plan to keep control of the House rests on their plan to knock off about a dozen Democratic incumbents, which he said was flawed.

"The so called top tier Republican challengers to our Democratic incumbents are more like a baggage brigade. From millions owed in back taxes, to outsourcing, to mismanagement, these Republican candidates are weighed down by baggage that ensures middle class families can't trust them and certainly won't vote for them," Robby Mook told reporters on a Thursday conference call.

The Democrats need to win control of 25 seats in the House to wrest the majority from the Republicans.
